Vaughan Jones

18 Nov 2020, by ablahatherell in News

With the untimely death of Vaughan Jones on 6 September 2020, mathematics lost one of its most original and delightful personalities. Vaughan made a number of notable discoveries in topology and operator algebras, most famously his eponymous `Jones’ polynomial that linked several fairly distinct areas of mathematical science.

Vaughan was a committed New Zealander who could be often found on or near the local beaches. He was due to speak at the HIMR-sponsored conference in honour of Michael Atiyah now scheduled for September 2021.
