Congratulations to Andrew Jones, Heilbronn Fellow in Data Science at Bristol, who has accepted a postdoctoral position at the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh. He will be working with Patrick Rubin-Delanchy’s research group from September 2024 in an EPSRC programme grant on Network Stochastic Processes and Time Series (NeST), a multi-million pound award, between Imperial, Oxford, Bath, LSE, York and Bristol. This 6-year programme will study large dynamic networks, with applications in medicine, transportation, cybersecurity, the environment, finance, biology and economics.

Following his PhD from Sheffield under the supervision of Tobias Berger, Andy joined the School of Mathematics in Bristol then the Heilbronn Institute.  Andy’s area of research is the application of spectral techniques to the statistical analysis of networks.

His collaboration with Microsoft’s research team gave him extra insight into some of the problems they have when handling real-world data.  The Microsoft project was based on 2 papers with Ian Gallagher and Patrick Rubin-Delanchy, Spectral embedding for dynamic networks with stability guarantees, published in NeurIPS 2021, and the multilayer random dot product graph, arXiv:2007.10455.

Andy’s latest paper spectral embedding of weighted graphs (with Patrick Rubin-Delanchy, Ian Gallagher, Anna Bertiger and Carey Priebe) has been published in Journal of the American Statistical Association in July 2023.

We wish Andy every success in his new position and future research!
