Congratulations to James Maxwell
08 Aug 2024, by News inCongratulations to James Maxwell who has accepted a new position as Data Analyst at Legal and General in Cardiff starting this autumn.
James joined the Heilbronn Institute in Bristol in October 2022 following his PhD from Swansea University under the supervision of Jeffrey Giansiracusa (Durham) and Edwin Beggs (Swansea). His work was focused on the generalisations of key results from tropical geometry to the multivalued setting of hyper structures. His paper ‘Generalising Kapranov’s Theorem for Tropical Geometry over Hyperfields‘ which was completed and submitted during his PhD has been published early this year in the Journal of Algebra.
James currently works on using techniques and tools from algebra, geometry, and combinatorics to answer questions in tropical geometry and algebraic combinatorics. He has also been trying to understand connections between tropical geometry and other areas such as rigidity theory and algebraic statistics.
James was awarded a Heilbronn Small Grant last year to fund a two-day conference on tropical geometry and applications. He was also awarded a Focused Research Grant, with co-investigator Sean Dewar, to bring together leading experts to develop ambitious new techniques in algebraic statistics by combining methods from both rigidity theory and tropical geometry. Their aim was to capitalise on recently discovered connections between the three topics to develop further applications for algebraic statistics.
We wish James every success in his new position and future research!
