Congratulations to Alex Levine
21 Aug 2024, by News inCongratulations to Alex Levine who has ben offered a postdoctoral research position at the University of East Anglia starting this Autumn.
Alex joined the University of Manchester as a Heilbronn Research Fellow following his PhD from Heriot-Watt University under the supervision of Laura Ciobanu. He was awarded the LMS Early Career Fellowship at the University of St Andrews to support him in the transition between PhD and his first postdoctoral position.
Alex’s research lies in the interaction between (semi)group theory and theoretical computer science, with a particular focus on formal languages and questions of decidability. One area he has worked on recently is the question: given a group G, is there an algorithm that takes in an equation in G, and outputs whether the equation admits a solution? He has written a paper with Laura Ciobanu (Heriot-Watt) and Alex Evetts (Manchester) this year in this area on equations with various types of constraints in virtually abelian group.
Alex was one of the organisers of the 36th NBSAN meeting which was held in Manchester in June 2024, as a satellite to the 75th British Mathematical Colloquium (which also featured a Semigroups Workshop)
We wish Alex every success in his new position and future research!
