20th Anniversary | 2005 — 2025
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research. Founded as a partnership between the UK mathematics community and Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the University of Bristol has been the Institute’s principal academic partner since its creation in 2005. The Heilbronn Institute now also has facilities in London and Manchester, and is playing an increasingly important role in supporting UK Mathematics and Early-Career Mathematicians. This is becoming a distinctive and highly regarded feature of the Institute’s brand, supported in part by UKRI funding.

Over the years the Institute has supported more than 150 research fellows from some of the leading mathematics departments and with excellent academic credentials. During the last 10 years alone, members of the Institute produced over 600 papers on their external research, including many published in leading international journals. The Institute has also supported over 100 PhD students from 18 different universities. In partnership with the Clay Mathematics Institute, the Heilbronn Institute funded 7 summer schools which were attended by over 870 PhD students and early career researchers.
The occasion of the 20th anniversary will be marked by a Celebration Day at the 2025 Heilbronn Annual Conference. The conference will take place over two days on 10-11 July 2025, and it will cover a broad range of mathematics, including algebra, combinatorics, data science, geometry, number theory, probability, quantum information. The conference will bring together members of the Institute, distinguished visiting speakers, and other members of the UK mathematical community. We have been fortunate to attract excellent speakers to our Annual Conferences since the Institute’s inception in 2005. You can find a list of past speakers in this link.
