Prof. Anthony Lee and Prof. Nick Whiteley appointed as Heilbronn Data Science Chair
20 Mar 2020, by News inCongratulations to Prof. Anthony Lee and Prof. Nick Whiteley who have been appointed to the position of Heilbronn Chair in Data Science.
Anthony and Nick have distinguished themselves as internationally outstanding leaders in their field and these appointments support our position as one of the top centres for statistical and data science in the UK.
Prof. Lee is a computational statistician working primarily in the area of stochastic algorithms to approximate intractable quantities that arise in data analysis. Research in this area is interdisciplinary, bringing together advances in applied probability, algorithms, and statistics. He is interested in algorithms that scale well in parallel and distributed computing environments, and in computational and statistical trade-offs when conducting inference.
He said: “This is an exciting and important time for all the constituent disciplines within Data Science. I am honoured to take on this role and work with Professor Whiteley and all of our colleagues to continue strengthening Data Science at the University of Bristol.”
Prof. Whiteley’s research focuses on the statistical and mathematical foundations of Data Science. He aims to develop our understanding of how best to fit models, produce forecasts, test hypotheses and make decisions sequentially as data arrive. He has particular interests in nonlinear filtering theory and algorithms; inference in high-dimensional dynamic stochastic systems; and the interface between convex optimization and statistical modelling.
He said: “I am honoured to take up this position and thrilled at the prospect of working with colleagues in the School of Mathematics, the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research, the Jean Golding Institute and many others across the University in expanding Data Science at Bristol.”
