The Heilbronn Institute is delighted to be supporting Celebrating ….. Katherine Johnson. Celebrating is a series of virtual events that will introduce primary school students to amazing black mathematicians, past and present. Celebrating is one of Big Ideas programmes that empower participants to make a difference on the big issues we all care about. Celebrating diversity, representation and enjoyment through an early-stage intervention to widen participation in mathematics.


Celebrating offers a rolling programme of activity in which historical and contemporary Black mathematicians are celebrated. Celebrating continues in January with the story of Katherine Johnson. ‘Human Computer’ Katherine Johnson worked for NASA and was critical to the success of crewed space flight – her story featured in the film “Hidden Figures”.

Guest Speaker:

Angela Tabiri, African Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

During this special event classes will meet the world’s most interesting mathematician, Angela Tabiri and discover more about the maths which made Katherine Johnson world-famous.

Angela Tabiri has a passion for quantum, or non-commutative, algebra, which she researches at the Ghana branch of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (Aims) and for changing assumptions that African female mathematicians can only teach, which she pursues as academic manager for the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Programme in Ghana.
