Congratulations to Ross Paterson, who has been awarded a Heilbronn Prize Fellowship at the University of Bath, starting this autumn. Prize Fellowships at Bath are prestigious appointments for Early Career Researchers, offering the opportunity to establish an independent research programme, with a fast-track route to a permanent position in a supportive and well-resourced environment.
Following his PhD at the University of Glasgow, under the supervision of Alex Bartel, Ross joined the Heilbronn Institute in Bristol in 2022. Ross is a number theorist whose research interests lie in arithmetic statistics and Diophantine geometry.
The University of Bath currently hosts a growing group in Number Theory, with close collaborations across the region, including with the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research in Bristol. Ross’s appointment offers exciting scope both to deepen these existing links and to broaden the range of number theory research through new collaborations.
Together with his collaborators Koymans, Santens, and Shute, Ross has recently completed a research paper entitled “Local Solubility of Generalised Fermat Equations”, which significantly improves upon and extends existing results in the literature in this area. The paper is available on arXiv: https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.17619
We wish Ross every success in his future research.
