Congratulations to the Founding Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences
03 Feb 2026, by in NewsWe are proud to announce the appointment of Mark Kambites (Heilbronn Associate Chair), Tom Murdoch (Honorary Professor of Mathematics), Owen Patashnick (Principal Heilbronn Fellow), and Helen Wilson (external member of the UKRI Oversight Committee for the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research) as Founding Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci). They join the UK’s most prestigious mathematicians to help solve some of society’s biggest challenges.
The Academy for the Mathematical Sciences brings together expertise from academia, education, business, industry and government across the UK, creating vital connections to harness the power of the discipline. Through expert-led policy development, broad access to mathematical expertise and sustained investment, the Academy aims to play a critical role in addressing key national challenges and supporting the pipeline of people, knowledge and skills essential for economic growth and societal wellbeing.
As Fellows of the Academy, they will contribute their independent expertise in service of the public good. Their work will support national priorities, champion excellence in mathematics education, strengthen the UK’s research and innovation base, and help ensure that mathematics continues to drive opportunity, resilience and prosperity across all four nations.
The Fellows will continue in their existing roles at their respective institutions, while working together through the convening power of the Academy to benefit the UK as a whole.
